Why Buy the 2018 Subaru Outback

Initially produced as a station wagon version of Subaru's midsize sedan, the Legacy, the Outback eventually became a standalone model. Almost two decades later, it is one of the top wagons in the market: thanks to a family-friendly design with spacious seats and large cargo space. The 2018 edition is split into base-level, Premium, Limited, and Touring trims.

2018 Subaru Outback in Southfield MI - OVERVIEW

Exterior - Reasons Why Buy the Outback

For this model year, the wagon's front and rear fascias have been redesigned for a sharper, more aggressive look. In addition, the fold-away side mirrors, which have integrated turn-signal indicators on the Limited and higher, have been redesigned to decrease interior cabin noise. Other standard exterior features include roof rails for extra cargo carrying capacity and projector-beam halogen headlights. Going with the Premium or higher adds fog lights for illumination that is more helpful in visually impairing driving conditions. The Limited and Touring stand out with their power tilt-and-slide glass moonroofs and LED steering responsive headlights for more accurate illumination. Even more unique is the Touring, which is the only model with silver-finished roof rails, and a rear bumper cover. The base-level and Premium trims run on seventeen-inch alloy wheels, and 18-inch ones go on the Limited and Touring.

As a midsize wagon, the 2018 Subaru Outback provides up to 108.1 cubic feet of passenger volume, plus 35.5 cubic feet of space for cargo room. You can bend down the rear bench-style seat for more cargo space, and the front consists of a 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat and a 4-way manually adjustable front passenger seat. If you go with the Premium instead of the base-level trim, there would be front-seat heating capability and 6-way driver-seat power adjustability. The Limited comes with additional rear-seat heating capability, leather upholstery, and 6-way front passenger-seat power adjustability. The top-level Touring is the only trim with a heated steering wheel.

Mechanical / Powertrain - Request More Information

The base-level and Premium trims of this 2018 model use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder horizontally opposed, flat-four-cylinder (H4) engine, which produces 175 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. On the Limited and Touring, you can go with a 3.6-liter H6, instead; it produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. Hitched to each engine is a continuously variable transmission, which is accompanied by a 6-speed manual mode with paddle shifters to simulate manual gear shifting. Like all other vehicles from the same manufacturer, this wagon has standard all-wheel drive, which is accompanied by X-MODE® technology to optimally combat wheelspin in low-friction situations. With its MacPherson strut front and double wishbone rear independent suspension, road turbulence is considerably tamed. Also, the suspension gives the vehicle a significant amount of ground clearance to keep it further away from potentially damaging objects on the driving surface. The wagon's electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering produces a turning circle of 36.1 cubic feet.

Safety - Why Buy with Safety Features

For restraint and cushioning in the event of a crash, the 2018 Subaru Outback has dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and dual roof-mounted side curtain airbags. Also on board are traction control to combat skidding on slippery surfaces, electronic vehicle stability control to keep you on the intended driving path, hill start assist for safe driving up a steep slope from a parked position, hill descent control for safe driving down a steep slope from a parked position, four-wheel ventilated disc brakes for shortening stopping distances, anti-lock braking to prevent wheel lockup during hard stops, brake assist for additional stopping ability when necessary, and brake override for halting unwanted acceleration. On the Premium trim and higher, you will also get STARLINK™ Safety and Security for a suite of services that includes SOS emergency assistance, roadside assistance, automatic collision notification, and stolen vehicle recovery. Added on the Limited and Touring are blind-spot detection with lane change assist and rear cross-traffic assist. Exclusive to the Touring are high beam assist, reverse automatic braking, and EyeSight® driver-assistance technology, which includes pre-collision braking, lane departure and keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.
